On this date in 1972, NASA launched our final mission to the moon - Apollo 17. Astronauts Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans and Jack Schmitt were the last to visit our Moon and the last to see this beautiful sight.



This picture was made after they left Earth orbit about five hours into their flight.  It centers on southern Africa and Madagascar with Antarctica on the bottom and the Mediterranean Sea at the very top.  NASA named this iconic picture The Blue Marble. It is one of the most widely distributed pictures of all time.
