On this date in 2007, Democrat Nancy Pelosi took over as Speaker of the US House of Representatives.  She became the first female Speaker and the highest ranking female elected official in American history.  She has also held  the titles of Minority Whip and Minority Leader.  She served as Speaker until January 2011 when Republican John Boehner took over.  Nancy represents the California's 12th congressional district which is located in San Francisco County.

Ms Pelosi graduated from Trinity College in Washington DC - a catholic liberal arts school.  Trinity is now a University and is operated by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.  She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Her father and later her brother held the office of Mayor of Baltimore.  She married Paul Pelosi in 1963 and moved to the Bay area.  They raised five children and have eight grandchildren.

She became active in the California Democrat party and then the national party.  She won a special election to fill the seat of a deceased member of the US House in 1987 and has served there ever since.

Representative Pelosi is among the wealthiest of congress people.  Her estimated net worth is $58 million.  Her husband is the owner of Financial Leasing Services, Inc.which has real estate investments and supplies venture capital and consulting to others.  One of his major customers is Nancy who funnels chunks of her PAC money to him through rental and services charges.   Oh yes, everyone gets rich in D.C.
