This Sunday we hear the gospel of John in which he records the events of the wedding feast in the city of Cana. Evidently the bride and groom or their parents were family friends of Joseph and Mary. Jesus and some of his friends were also invited.
As the story goes, after partying for awhile they were running out of wine at the wedding reception. Mary told her son what was happening. It was understood that this would become an embarrassment to those throwing the party and she knew he could solve the problem. Jesus had never performed a miracle in public before. Of course, Jesus took care of the problem by changing water to wine.
Significant to this miracle is the fact that it was done at the bequest of his mother. Obedience to ones parents is reinforced. The other significance is that it was at a wedding. The sacredness of marriage is reinforced. Finally, this miracle bookends with one of the last acts of his public life, when he told his disciples that the wine at their Passover feast was now his blood.
