Okay, we're finally here - the day before the Academy Awards are presented. I've not seen all the best movies this year.
I rejected seeing Carol or Spotlight out of content. Carol didn't make the cut despite good reviews.
Bridge of Spies was good; not great. I saw it in December and enjoyed it. It was more interesting to me, I think, because I lived through that period. Tom Hanks was professional as usual - but not good enough to get into the Best Actor running.
I also saw The Big Short in December. It was interesting to me but came off too much like a documentary. I think it's attraction is limited as far as the general movie-going audience is concerned.
Early reviews scared me away from The Martian. Good idea for a story but not much to work with in a full length movie. It had 'boring' written all over it for me.
I loved the old Mel Gibson Mad Max movies but I didn't have a chance to catch the current offering - Fury Road. Same with Brooklyn and Room - they aren't playing locally.
I saw The Revenant on Thursday. It's a powerful picture show made around a strong story. It's gripping but also bloody, gory and cruel. It's lasts two hours and twenty minutes - that's about my limit. It should stand well in the Best Picture category. Leo DiCaprio is good. If he gets the Best Actor award for his performance, he'll have gotten it despite speaking the least dialogue of any winner in history. My guess is that some voters may hold that against him.
Let's see what happens.
