On this date in 1981, MTV began operation. At 12:01 am, the network was launched with the words, "Ladies and Gentlemen, rock and roll." Then it played it's first music video - a cute number called "Video killed the radio star" by The Buggles.
No, I never heard of "Video Killed the Radio Star" and, "No!" I never heard of The Buggles. It was a New Wave song by a New Wave band. I guess that explains why I never heard of it. I've been 'old wave' since long before 1981.
MTV was a real novelty in '81. They played nothing but music videos - 24/7. It seemed harmless when we first got it on cable. Even I liked it. It all went well until I realized my teenage daughters could become music zombies - and fall in love with the 'idol of the day'. Enough!
Now, you can't find a music video on MTV. Viacom, the owner, has about 19 stations available in the US - several of which play videos. The seed branched into teen, comedy, and movie networks.
Anyway, 35 years ago today someone had a great idea and made a lot of money with it. Don't let your good ideas get away from you. Press on and cash in!
