WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, metric was a system of measurement the foreigners used.  There was nothing done in the U.S. in metric though it was standard in most of the rest of the world.

Then, along came Sputnik and the space race and the world changed.  The big push was on in the States to surpass the rest of the world in math and science.  To do that, many thought we should go to the metric system of measures so that we could better trade information with, read and understand foreign scientists and their work.

Of course, there was a big push-back by many segments of society in the U.S.  School kids hated the idea - many teachers dreaded it - others were claiming it was unnecessary and would set back our educational processes.  We heard stories when I was in school that we would have to learn it and use it in the coming years.  Some people said that's all that would be used in the near future.  It was ominous.  It never happened.

No, it never came to pass . . . we still use gallons and pounds and miles and inches . . .  or did it?  The speedometer on my car reads both MPH and KPH.  Coke is sold in one and two Liter bottles.  My wine is in 120 ML bottles.  We run 5-K not 5 mile races.  Your next injection at the doctor's office will be measured in cc's.

So, maybe it didn't take over but it has worked it's way into our culture.  I suspect it will continue.
Don't fight it - embrace it.
