CANDY MAN

Yesterday, I wrote about the TV series Bonanza.  Here is a related story.

One of the regulars on the show for most of it's run was a character called Candy who was the ranch foreman.  Candy was played by David Canary who grew up in Massillon, Ohio.

Canary went to the University of Cincinnati on a football scholarship while taking acting and singing.  He won the team award in both his junior and senior years as the best lineman.   In 1960, he was selected by the Denver Broncos in the draft of college players.  He turned down pro football to go after an acting career.

He played in many movies, Broadway plays and other TV shows. He was in All My Children for over 25 years. Most notably, he won five (5) daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.    His most recent acting role was in the TV show Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2011

Canary died last November due to complications of Alzheimer's Disease.
