RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, there weren't as many Christmas songs as there are now.  Mostly, there were only what we call Christmas carols.  Each of these had a religious theme or flavor.

Here is the history of secular Christmas songs.

Jingle Bells" is absolutely the first.  It was written in the 1850's but doesn't really mention Christmas. "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" and "Up on the Housetop" were written in the 1860's.   "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" was written in 1949.  "Frosty the Snowman" followed in 1950 by the same singer - Gene Autry.  When Bing Crosby did a cover of it, there was no stopping this type of song.

Now, you can listen to Christmas music for quite awhile and not hear a reference to the birth of Jesus Christ.  Don't blame it on the Jews or Muslims.
