RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

1/02/2017

JANUARY 2

On this date in 1974, President Richard Nixon signed into law a bill requiring the speed limit on all U.S. highways to be set no higher than 55 miles per hour.  This was done as a gasoline conservation measure in response to an embargo by OPEC.

OPEC, of course, is the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.  At that time, they controlled over half the world's oil.  The embargo was intended to raise the price of oil for their benefit.  We were at their mercy.

By 2008, we had become self sufficient in oil production thanks to new technologies in the discovery and production of oil bearing land.  Most states repealed the 55 mph restrictions.

Since then, the BHO administration has attempted to thwart and roll back our progress in this regard in favor of it's 'green constituency'.  I think that era is over.  Make America Great Again.
