RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

SUNDAY SERVICE

This weekend at Catholic mass the scripture readings will again relate to Christmas - the birth of the Christ Child.  We hear the story of the coming of the Magi - the kings from the East - bearing gifts.  I think they were Persians - the land located around and beyond what we now call Iran.

Here's the part that strikes me.  These Magi, kings, priests, sorcerers (or whatever they were) from the far east did not look like the local people of Bethlehem.  They were foreigners.  They surely spoke a different dialect if not a completely different language.

Of course, the story of the Magi teaches us the value of generosity they showed in giving precious gifts;  the value of faith they showed in following a star;  the value of perseverance in their long journey;  the value of love they must have had.  The story should also make us question how we interact with those from far away - with those who don't look like us - with those who don't speak the same language.  Think about that.
