INTERFAITH WISDOM

For some, the religion of Buddhism is enclosed in meditation.  Zen means meditation.  The aim of this meditation is that they and all creatures may be free of suffering.  That is the ultimate goal.

During a meditation service, one asks oneself:  Who am I?  Who are we people?  Why am I here?  Why am I suffering?  Why do others suffer?  What should I be doing?  How can I reduce my suffering and the suffering of others?

Meditation, in a meditation service, can be performed in a sitting position - on a mat or chair. and/or while walking - each of these are done in silence.  Following meditation, a chanting ritual is performed by all participants.  This chanting is like a common prayer.

Do not be confused that meditation is speaking to yourself.  The emphasis is on listening.  Listening to the Zen Master; listening to your conscience; listening to your heart;  listening to the one voice chanting.

Some quotes of famous Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.

"Mindfulness helps you go home to the present.  And every time you go there and recognize a condition of happiness that you have, happiness comes."

"Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet."

"The most precious gift we can offer anyone is our attention.  When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers"
