MISTER EASE

Flies solved this mystery.  As the story goes, two researchers in the 19th century, were trying to figure out just what function the pancreas had.  No one knew just what it did for the body.

With the same logic used by many a shade tree mechanic, they took the pancreas out of a healthy dog and watched what happened.  They didn't notice any effect on the dog right off but they did notice that flies were being attracted to the dog's urine.  Everywhere he peed - the flies followed.

Voila!  There was sugar in the urine.  The flies were after the sugar.  Oh no!  The dog had instant diabetes.  It was obvious that the pancreas had something to do with taking the sugar out of the urine -  that it controlled the sugar in the blood stream and the whole body.

All of this led to finding that the secretion of the pancreas was what we now call insulin and that this insulin was a hormone that controlled the metabolism of carbohydrates and glucose levels in the bloodstream.  Doctors could now save people who had diabetes - thanks to the flies.
