This weekend the Church celebrates the solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.
Fittingly, the Old Testament reading recounts Moses speaking to the Jews who wondered into the desert for many years in their search for the Promised Land. Their great leader reminded them that when they were hungry, God sent them manna to eat. And, when they were thirsty, God caused water to spring from a rock.
Paul wrote to some of his flock that they were all one because they all ate the same bread and drank the same wine. It was this one act that unified the early church.
The Gospel of John relates that Jesus explained to the Jews that like God gave their ancestors manna and water when they needed it to survive and that, now, He was giving them His body and His blood so that they could reach the real promised land - eternity in heaven. Eat and drink this bread and wine, He told them, and they would never die.
