On this date in 1886, Karl Benz unveiled the first motor car built solely for that purpose. They called it the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. About 25 of these cars were built between 1886 and 1893. The manufacturer became known as Mercedes Benz.
The Motorwagen was a 3-wheeled vehicle with engine in the rear. The improved models made after the original would go up to 10 mph. You could buy one for 600 marks which equaled $150.00 in 1886. In today's dollars, that would be about $4,000.00.
The very first automobile - 131 years ago today.
