On this date in 1947, a Norwegian adventurer landed his balsa wood raft on the Tuamotu Islands in Polynesia. He had traveled from South America with a crew of five. His name was Thor Heyerdahl and his raft was named the Kon-Tiki. Heyerdahl's raft traveled about 5,000 miles in 100 days.
He had proved that it was possible for people to cross the Pacific Ocean on a handmade raft. It proved the theory possible that South America, and maybe Central and North America, was visited by people who came across the ocean. People from Asia.
I chose this incident because one of the books that captured my imagination in high school was called Kon-Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl. I'd recommend it for everyone.
