RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

Yikes!

So sad to see the tragedy in eastern Texas unfold.  The effects of Hurricane Harvey are catastrophic.
It reminds me that water is a two-edged sword.  We can't live without it but too much and we can't live with it.

I'm reminded of something else - funny how my mind works.  Houston was a small town 70 years ago when I was a tot.  It had a population of less than 500,000.  Spurred on by the oil and space industries, it is now the 4th largest population center in the country.  It was originally cowboy country.

Now the connection.  Do you know why cowboys wear cowboy boots?  This is not a joke.  I always thought it had to do with riding a horse.  No!  It has to do with snakes.  Venomous snakes strike at a persons lower legs.  Cowboys and all western farm and ranch workers wear cowboy boots to protect themselves from snake bites.

Well, I happen to know that most of the venomous snakes in America can be found in eastern Texas. So, not only are the locals fighting water but so are the snakes.  When the water recedes, I'm guessing displaced and angry snakes that didn't drown will be a real menace to society.  No thank you.

You heard it here first!  I may send my wife down there to help with the coming snake problem.
