This week we borrow from astronaut Frank Borman. He, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders staffed the Apollo 8 space mission in 1968 which was first to circle the moon. This was in preparation for the Apollo 11 landing mission the following year. Their mission was at least as dangerous as the landing. Our ability to circle the moon was only theoretical until they proved it could be done.
Their space module circled the moon on Christmas eve that year. When they were totally behind the moon, we had no contact with them - the world held it's collective breath. As they came to the point where Earth came back into their vision like the morning sun and communication was returned, the three took turns reading to the world from the Bible - the Book of Genesis.
Commander Borman offered this prayer according to GodWeb.
Give us, Oh God, the vision which can see Your love in the world in spite of human failure.
Give us the faith to trust Your goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness.
Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts.
And show us what each one of us can do to set forward the coming of the day universal peace.
Amen.
