On this date in 1965, the Pentagon (Department of Defense) told President Lyndon Banes Johnson that in order to succeed with current plans for the war in Vietnam, our troop level must be increased from 120,000 to 400,000.
I was drafted effective December 17 - just 21 days later. It is my guess that the Defense Department had already increased the number of draftees before asking the President for his approval.
Fifty-two years ago today...
