RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

SHOW ME THE MONEY

If you were watching the NFC playoff game Sunday in which the Minnesota Vikings scored a touchdown as the clock ran out to go ahead of the New Orleans Saints 29-24 and you were wondering why the officials were frantically worrying about the extra point, try to realize what was at stake.  The extra point had no chance of changing the outcome of the game.  The game is what is most important - right?  No!  There is more.  Eleven Saints players had to put their uniforms back on to simulate the extra point play.  Why?    THE MOB!  THE BOOKMAKERS!

The Las Vegas betting houses were taking bets that the Vikings would win; some by 5 and others by 5 1/2 points. The touchdown put them five points ahead.  That turned a bunch of bets into a push.  The extra point would have made the Vikings 6 point winners and altered the outcome for millions of dollars of bets.  The players showed no interest and refused to attempt the point.  They took a knee.  If you had money on the Saints plus 5 1/2 points, you won.  Most of the money in Vegas was on the Saints.  The book makers lost, but it could have been worse.  Oooops!

The play had to be run because the NFL cannot risk any hint of collusion with betting interests.
