Continuing to go around the world with intoxicants takes us this week to the Middle East. I worked for many years in a very small company, four or five people, where the owner had some Greek or Lebanese blood in him - or so he maintained when it was time to celebrate. His drink of choice when he was almost completely snookered was ouzo.
Ouzo is a dry liquor with the flavor of anise - which is the flavor of licorice, if you ask me. It is meant to be imbibed before a meal to enhance your appetite. According to my friend, you can drink it anytime and, in the same way they yell "OPA!" in a Greek restaurant when serving a flamed dish, you yell "OUZO!" before you down a shot of this scalding liquid.
More than this, I know not . . . but, it can be fun. Try it sometime.
