RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

JULY 9

On this date in 1850, President Zachary Taylor died of a belly ache.  It was probably a form of cholera that did him in.  There are those that think he may have been assassinated by poisoning but attempts to prove that have gone to no avail.

During his short illness, his doctors attempted to cure him by bleeding him; blistering him; giving him ipecac (causes vomiting), calomel (a fungicide), opium, and quinine.  From the sounds of that - his doctors may have killed him.

Taylor was the 12th President of the United States.  He was succeeded by his vice-president Millard Fillmore who completed his term.   168 years ago today.
