RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

SLINK

In 1943, a naval engineer named Richard James was experimenting with different mechanisms to stabilize naval instruments in rough seas.  The problem was metallurgical - finding the right metal that would protect the instrument, defeat gravity and prevent excess oscillation.

One try was a spring that turned out all too flexible.  When he knocked it off of the table it was on, he saw it walk over some books and onto the floor.  What the heck was that?  He went home with the spring and showed his wife who showed it to some neighborhood kids who loved it.

Richard made some refinements and gave up his job.  He and his wife, Betty, went into business - making springs.  Betty named them "Slinky."  In 1945, they started marketing them and, in round numbers, sold more than 300 million.  I bet you've had one.

Remember, even your failures and mistakes can turn into gold - stay positive!.
