In the 1950s, the US Army developed a weapons system they called the Davy Crockett. It was a mobile nuclear recoilless rifle that a three-man crew could fire from a stand or a jeep. It came in two versions; one shooting about 1-1/4 miles and the other about 2-1/2 miles. The atomic projectile it fired was the equivalent of 10-20 tons of TNT.
The weapon was deployed from 1956 through 1970 in Germany, as a Cold War deterrent to the Soviet Union, and in Korea along the DMZ. It was never fired in combat. (If I fired an A-bomb from that thing, I would start moving in the opposite direction real fast.)
It was news to me!
