INTERFAITH WISDOM

O come, O come Emmanuel.  Reference to Emmanuel can be found in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah.  He prophesied to the Jews that a Savior would come - he called him Emmanuel.  In Hebrew it means, "God with us."   In 7:14, Isaiah prophesied that a king would come to vanquish their enemies. He would be their Savior; the Messiah.  In Hebrew, Messiah means "Anointed one."

That chapter and verse is a sticking point between Christians and Jews.  The Christian Gospel writers, Matthew and Luke, interpret Isaiah's prophecy to be about Jesus - the son of Mary and Joseph born in Bethlehem.  In one week, Christians will celebrate the birth of the Messiah.

A song of Advent; Christian preparation for Christmas.

O come, O come, Emmanuel
and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here,
until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel
shall come to thee, Oh Israel

O come, O come, Thou Lord of Might
Who to thy tribes, on Sinai's height
in ancient times didst give the law.
in cloud and majesty and awe.
Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel
shall come to the, Oh Israel
