POLAR BEARS

I saw where the people at the Cincinnati Zoo are keeping around-the-clock watch on a female polar bear.  It seems we don't have a way to test them for pregnancy - so, they just keep watching and hoping.  Luckily for them, polar bears only give birth during a very limited time span - during our Winter months.

Newborn polar bears weigh less than 2 pounds.  Yikes!  That's small.  Their mothers, who normally weigh in at about 400-700 lbs, can double their weight during pregnancy.  Mama bear's milk has more fat in it than any other land mammal.  Papa polar bear weighs twice as much as mama bear.

Seals make up most of the polar bear diet.  Polar bears are great long distance swimmers but seals swim faster.  Cute little seals have to breath and they get tired then they end up on shore.  Just like we eat shrimp cocktail on ice, the polar bears love their seals on ice.

So, our zookeepers keep awatch...wishing and hoping baby bear appears.  If it does, let us hope mama doesn't sit on it.
