THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This weekend we celebrate the beginning of Advent.  For us, it is a time of preparation; preparation for the coming of Jesus on Christmas.  The readings you will hear at Catholic mass this weekend are all about preparation; preparation for the coming of Jesus.  But, there is a difference.

We think of this season culminating in a feast and time of gift giving.  That's what we are preparing for.

The readings are about something different.  From the Old Testament, we hear that the Prophet Jeremiah wrote to his people and said that a savior was coming.  From the New Testament, Paul wrote a letter to the Christian  people of Thessaloniki urging them to live in love in order to be prepared for the Lord's return.  And finally, in Luke's gospel, Jesus urges everyone to be prepared, to be vigilant always and to know that the end could come at any time.

So, prepare for Christmas but, during this time especially, remember that you must always be prepared to meet your maker.  Live in love for one another.
