The site was developed in 1845 and includes 733 acres located behind rock walls on Spring Grove Avenue. It is a non-denominational cemetery with grounds that include 12 ponds and many chapels and mausoleums. The architect who designed the grounds brought in trees and plants from around the world. It is a botanical and horticultural masterpiece and a sanctuary for wildlife as well as the deceased.
You may think that there it incongruous that the most beautiful park in the city was built for the dead - but do not. It is there for you to visit. Come in the Spring. It is spectacular.
