In 1981, five cases of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) were reported in the United States. It was HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Most people had never heard of it. We originally thought it was confined to the gay and intravenous drug users. It wasn't. The disease exploded in the population exponentially.
It turned out the surest way of contacting the disease was through blood transfusion. It wasn't until this date in 1985, that a reliable test for the virus in blood was developed and accepted by the Food and Drug Administration. To this day, every blood donation in the country is put through this test. I am now a monthly donor of platelets and plasma. I can't imagine what a mess our country would be in without this test.
I'm A+ What are you? They take all types. Save a life today.
