UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES

In 1970, it was estimated that almost all of the illegal aliens crossing our southern border came in for temporary work...they were migrant workers.  They crossed the border illegally, stayed three months and then went back home. 

Some Americans complained that these migrant workers were taking jobs from U.S. citizens.  Pressure was put on our government to stop those illegally crossing our border.  It was decided that we should tighten border security.

Those migrants who were here in the country, decided that it had become too dangerous to cross the border so they just stayed here even though they really didn't want to.  Others who barely made it across after that were reluctant to go back home because it was now too dangerous.  Our tightening of the border caused many to stay here who would rather have not. 

If we would have created a system of temporary visas for workers instead of just shutting down the border, we might have less illegal immigrants here today.
