ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE

Alexis de Tocqueville was a renowned 19th century French diplomat, philosopher, political scientist and historian.  He authored many books including some about our country.  Here are a few excerpts.

The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

America is great because she is good.  If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.

There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle.

Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.

The health of a democratic society may be measured in the quality of functions preformed by private citizens.

All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.

The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened that any other nation but rather in her ability to repair her faults.

Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word; equality.  But the difference is that democracy seeks to attain equality through liberty and socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.

I PROPOSE HIS WORKS BE REQUIRED READING BEFORE ENTERING CONGRESS.
