RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

7/01/2019

JULY 1

On this date in 1987, WFAN radio station (660 AM) in NY City was launched.  It was the first all-sports all-the-time station in America.  With the cost of 50,000 watt power, it was quite a financial risk.  Not to worry!

Now, there are 24/7 sports stations blanketing the country.  We have two such stations in Cincinnati (1530 AM and 1360 AM) plus another that is about half sports (700 AM).  If you think we are over-saturated with sports radio, you might be right.

There are 24/7 news stations in some markets, but not here.  In some parts of the country, the only AM stations with any power are broadcasting religious programming - we have one here on AM 910.  There is very little music on AM but always a political view or two.  All that said, sports is now king of the AM dial and it all really got going thirty-two years ago today.

Suits me!
