This week at Catholic mass you will hear three readings with a common theme - a deadly sin - pride. If you think it's not a problem for you, take another look in the mirror.
The reading from Ecclesiastes talks about 'vanity'. Qoheleth warns: "Vanity of vanities. All things are vanity." He is saying, everything we have is a source of our vanity. For some actions, we should rightly have pride. All things we have come from God.
From Paul's letter, he advises, "Put to death the parts of you that are earthly; [the usual] and the greed that is idolatry." Pride in the things of the world is a form of idolatry. Nothing should be idolized except God.
In Luke's gospel reading, Jesus explains, in no uncertain terms, that the things you have on earth mean nothing - you must seek eternal life. He said, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." Death is only death "...for all who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God."
