THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This week at Catholic mass you will hear another passage from Luke's gospel that fortifies the message of last weekend.  Jesus told another story - this time the wealthy landowner was seemingly unkind to his servant.

After the servant did all of his duties in the fields, the owner bade him to wait on him further.  He did not offer rest, food and drink.  It seems cruel.  Jesus instructed that we, the servants, should accept this from the owner and gladly do more.  Doing only what is required is not enough.  We must look to do more.  Find what you do well in your life and strive to do more.

The first reading this weekend is from a rather obscure prophet named Habakkuk.  This man recounts a dream he had and in it received a sage answer from God.  You might want to read the whole passage in your Bible rather than the shortened version in our reading.

In the dream, Habakkuk goes on and on about all the terrible things going on in the world.  One after the other he explains these problems to God and then asks why He is not doing something about it.  Why doesn't God put down the evil people?  Why doesn't God stop all this violence?  Why doesn't God relieve all this hunger and misery?

God's answer was, "Have faith, be patient."  God works in His time and not by our clock.
