In December of 1965, The Beatles released a mono album in the U.S. called "Rubber Soul". The album was their first not centered around a hit single. No song on the album was ever released as a single. It was remastered in stereo after the original release. It included a ballad by Paul McCartney, that he also wrote, called "Michelle".
Radio stations were so enthralled with the Beatles that they had to have something to play. They chose "Michelle" from the album. In 1966, even though it was not released as a single, "Michelle" was awarded the Grammy for "Song of the Year". The Beatles included the song in many of their future albums including more than one compilation of their greatest hits.
There is on the internet a Beatles ebook detailing how the song came into being, was modified and distributed It's interesting reading. The song was always one of my favorites.
