On this date in 1961, President John F. Kennedy sent 18,000 military "advisers" to a little country I had never heard of - Vietnam - South Vietnam to be precise. That's a whole lot of advice.
I suppose no one my age thought much about it at the time. I was just sixteen years old and worrying more about driving my parents car than anything else. Fourteen years and 58,220 U.S. military casualties later, we were gone. Of the more than 3 million troops who served in country, only about 850,000 are still alive.
