This Sunday at Catholic mass the Old Testament reading will come from the Book of Maccabees. It is about martyrdom sustained by a mother and her seven sons. Wow! They all chose to be tortured and killed rather than break the laws of God as they knew them. It was gruesome but they did it with joy. They had a firm conviction of what the afterlife would be.
The New testament reading is from St. Paul's letter to the people of Thessalonica. He gave these Greeks a little pep talk, warning them to keep in mind what he had taught them and asked them to pray for him in his endeavors in Rome. He reminded them 'that not everyone sees God the way we do.' It's a good thing for us to remember, too.
In the Gospel reading from Luke, Jesus is being tested by the smart-ass religious leaders of the time. They tried to trap him with a story about life after death. Jesus confirmed what I have always felt - the afterlife is not like this life - it is spiritual. Our body dies at death but not our spirit. Our relationships won't be the same as on Earth. If and when we get there, our whole focus will be on God. Why not!?! If it gives you some satisfaction or good feeling to imagine you will see and renew relationships you had in this life, okay. Maybe, but, my guess is that it won't be all that important when that time comes. No one knows. See you there!
Have a blessed weekend!
