RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

HOLY COMMUNION

How do things slip by us?  I'm always amazed at things I hear, that I should have heard of long ago.
This goes back over fifty years.  It may not have passed you by, but it did me.  Here's the scoop.

Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., and Neil Armstrong were the Apollo 11 astronauts.  They were the first people to land on the Moon.  Mr. Aldrin is a Christian and a member of a Presbyterian Church and community.  In 1969, when they were preparing for that first lunar flight, he and Armstrong selected some things to take with them to commemorate their voyage.  Buzz selected communion bread and wine from his church which was put into standard astronaut plastic food containers and a small silver cup placed in his personal case.

After Aldrin landed the module on the moon's surface, he and Armstrong had some time before they were scheduled for their historic walk.   Buzz laid out his things on the table attached to the guidance computer and poured his wine.

Buzz then radioed the following to NASA.   "Houston, this is Eagle.  This is the LM Pilot speaking.  I would like to invite each person listening in, wherever and whomever he may be, to contemplate for a moment the events of the past few hours and to give thanks in his own individual way."

Before partaking and with only Armstrong listening, Aldrin read a passage from the Bible, John 15:5
"I am the vine, you are the branches.  Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit, for you can do nothing without me."

Note that this little service was not publicized at the time because Atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair had sued the agency because astronauts of Apollo 8 had read from the Book of Genesis and the case was unresolved.
