RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

At Catholic mass this weekend, you will hear as usual, the gospel story reflected in the old testament reading.  Isaiah portends that the light of the world will come to a specific region that was in the dark.  The passage from Matthew's Gospel tells how Jesus did exactly that.

This week I want to focus on the second reading from the New Testament.  Paul writes a letter to the recently converted and says that he hears there is great division among them.  Some claimed to be followers of Paul himself, others were followers of Paul's disciple Apollos and others were followers of Paul's disciple Cephas, still others claimed to be followers of Christ.  Many were unsure if all were teaching the same things.

Paul cleared this up in no uncertain terms.  He demanded that they were all followers of Christ.  It was that simple.  Whatever you do, do what Christ would do or what Christ would have you do.

The reason I bring this up is we have some of that same problem in our churches right now.  Never think that you are following a man, a preacher, a minister, a rabbi, - only the God who became man, Jesus Christ.  I put no trust in any other.
