On this date in 1801, Thomas Jefferson was elected (named) President of the United States by a vote of the House of Representatives. You see, Jefferson and Aaron Burr had tied with the same number of electoral votes during the general election in 1800. Strangely, to settle the impasse, Burr was elected (named) Vice President. Jefferson and Burr were the third to hold each office.
