RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

The readings at Catholic mass this weekend bring to mind "common sense."  It reminds me especially of the time in which we live.  People are afraid to speak at times because their words might be taken incorrectly.  It seems that someone could become offended no matter what we say.  People are so touchy.  This idea of trying to watch every word we say is difficult for many and almost impossible for a loudmouth like me.

In the gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus, as part of his sermon on the mount, instructs that we should not read too much or too little into words.   He was talking about the law as the Jews knew it.  He told them not to limit themselves to 'just' what is written but expand the words to include the whole sense of the commandments.

Don't think that "thou shalt not kill" only refers to murder.  Expand the sense to include all facets of your relationship with others.  You can do this with all of the laws - commandments.  You end up with . . . love God and love your neighbor.  Love goes beyond not hurting . . . it extends into helping.

Go beyond the minimum . . .

Bless you, have a great week.
