RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

At Catholic mass this weekend, you will hear readings about Peter and by Peter and a Gospel written by John.  The Gospel is a story about sheep, their shepherd,  the sheep gate and the gate keeper. The sheep gate was an opening in the wall and the way into the city.  Sheep were always a good metaphor  for people of that time -  sheep were everywhere.  Unless you've been to a sheep farm, you probably can't relate to the story that well.

Of course, we (all people) are the sheep.  The shepherd is not Jesus but those who lead the people - sometimes the clergy, sometimes others who have a different agenda.  (Be careful who you follow and idolize)  Jesus is not the gate keeper but the gate itself.  Jesus is the way.

If the one you follow does not lead you to the gate (Jesus), you're following the wrong dude.  If the one you are following does not lead you to the Jesus, you're following the wrong person.

The Psalm sung between readings today is the famous Song of David - Psalm 23.  Maybe, my favorite lines in the Bible.  It was David's take on the sheep/shepherd metaphor.   I'll give you the whole section today.  Read slowly and carefully.  Enjoy.

The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I lack.
In green pastures he makes me lie down;
to still water he leads me,
he restores my soul.
He guides me along right paths
for the sake of his name.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff comfort me.
You set a table before me
in front of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me
all the days of my life;
I will dwell in the house of the Lord
for endless days.
