RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

Today is a special day.   As a departure from my norm, I want to remind you of the readings associated with this day.   At catholic mass today,  you will hear about Mary, the mother of Jesus.  It is the feast of her Assumption to Heaven.  The Assumption is Mary's gift from her son.  Instead of cruel human death, burial, bodily degradation, etc., and instead of some post-life judgement and/or penitential reparation, Mary was assumed directly into Heaven.  No other person has ever been accorded that honor.

The first reading comes from the Book of Revelation.  Unlike all the other works of the Bible, this one is a prophesy.  Instead of recording what has happened it predicts what will happen.  The prophesy includes the mother of the savior of the world wearing the crown of the Queen of Heaven.

The Responsorial Psalm continues the theme.  It describes a woman adorned as queen who enters the palace of the king.

The Gospel reading is from Luke's description of Mary visiting her Aunt Elizabeth..  Elizabeth's pregnancy in her old age was a sign to Mary that what the Angel had told her was true.  She was about to become pregnant by the Spirit and produce a boy who would be the Son of God.  Heavy news!

Elizabeth said to her, "Mary, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb." .  There is no better way to reach the ear of God than through the mother of His son.  Pray to her often.
