Here is a brief capsule of what you will hear at Catholic mass this weekend. The key point is an excerpt from Matthew's Gospel. It is the basis for the validity of the Church. In this passage, Jesus asks his Apostles, "Who do the people say that I am?" They give him several answers including John the Baptizer and other prophets long dead. Then Jesus asks them, "Well, who do you say that I am?" While the others stammered, Simon Peter blurts "You are the Christ. The son of the living God." It was then that Jesus told Peter in the presence of the other Apostles, "You are Peter and upon this Rock I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven."
I must mention also about the feast celebrated on this day 8/22. It is the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We know that Mary gave birth to Jesus and mothered him for many years. At her request, he performed the first of His many miracles. She was with Him even to His death on the cross. She was assumed into Heaven in lieu of natural human death. It follows that Her place in Heaven would be higher than any other. She is rightly called Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Pray to God through her.
