THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

Today, the Catholic church celebrates the Feast of Saint Stephen.  He is known as the first martyr.  Stephen was a follower of Jesus who preached what Jesus had taught him after Jesus' death.

Some of the locals were not happy about him preaching as Jesus did and tried to embarrass him but they could not match Stephen's knowledge.  Stephen had the advantage of having received the Holy Spirit.  So, the jealous Jews stoned Stephen to death.  It is recorded that his final words were "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."  Not "No!"  Not "Stop!"  Just "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."  He died with confidence in God.

Sunday, is the Feast of the Holy Family; Mary, Joseph and Jesus.  An exemplar for all times.  The roots of many of our nation's and world's problems are found in the soil prepared by the media and the celebrities it promotes, educators, and politicians. All of these are devaluing the family directly or indirectly.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph we pray for our family, the families of our friends and all families of this world.  Let them know the importance of this unit for ourselves and all humanity.
