Tony grew up in Cincinnati and attended Walnut Hills High School. There, he won the Ohio State High School tennis tournament three times and played on their district champion basketball team as well. He also played tennis and basketball at the University of Cincinnati. He was a guard on the team that included future hall of famer Jack Twyman. His college career was interrupted for two years which he served in the Navy during the Korean War.
Tony was the number one amateur singles player in the world in 1953 and 1955. Players didn't rush into being pros back then. He went on to win 10 grand slam titles including two in singles at Wimbledon, two in the US National and another in the French Open. He played on the U.S. Davis Cup Teams in the 1950s and 60s and captained it in the late 70s. When his active playing career ended in 1963, he was voted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Mr. Trabert wrote books on tennis, gave motivational speeches and, with his son, ran a tennis camp He served as president of the Tennis Hall of Fame for ten years. He also was a commentator for CBS on tennis and golf programs. If all that wasn't enough, he managed to find time to marry Miss Utah, a Miss Universe contestant.
