ME AND MY PETS - PART 5

After Queenie's demise, we got one more dog that I remember.  I was in my teens and her name was Tammy.  I remember very little about her but one compelling incident.  Overall, I think she was a good dog.  She was a gentle, short haired medium-sized mutt.   Yes, a good dog.

For three or four years beginning when I was a senior in high school, I was somewhat active in school plays and local theater.  One of the plays I was a part of was a production of Camelot.  It's a cute musical set in medieval times.  The story chronicles the love triangle of King Arthur, his new wife Guinevere and the dashing young knight of his round table, Sir Lancelot.  I had the small comedic part of neighboring King Pellinore.

The play director noted that in the Broadway production, King Pellinore was on stage with a large, long-haired sheep dog.  Of course, this was not discussed when I took the part.  When full rehearsals began, I was coerced into bringing Tammy on stage with me.  I was against it but I tried it and it didn't seem too bad.  Of course, almost no one is in the auditorium during rehearsals.

Now comes show time!  Tammy didn't like that crowd.  As soon as she came on, the crowd was abuzz.  You didn't often see an animal in a local play.  Stretched to the end of her leash, she was in a tither.

I've always felt that Tammy was never the same after that experience. I'm sorry I did it to her.

She did allow me a bring-the-house-down moment.  During a matinee on the second weekend of shows, I made an adlib about the dog looking for a fire hydrant.  The crowd laughter stopped the show.  Cheap theatrics - I've never gotten over it.
