Did you know that the painting of religious icons is done using - not oils, acrylics, or water colors. It is done with something called tempera or egg tempera. The artist takes the yoke of an egg and mixes it with distilled water. Then, to powdered color pigments, a drop of this mixture is added. It is an ancient method that produces a permanent picture. The egg yoke holds it all together. Cool, huh? Here is what one looks like.
