The Olympic games are in progress so I thought it fitting to bring back an entry from 14 years ago that was a memorable Olympic moment that took place over 41 years ago.

QUOTATIONS
Memorable quotations of my lifetime
"Do you believe in Miracles? YES!!!"
-Al Michaels, February 22, 1980
The setting was Lake Placid, New York. It was the semifinal hockey game of the Winter Olympics. The heavily favored Soviet Union professional team against the young American all-amateur team. You know the story. Its been made into a great movie. Through the wonders of television, we could only see it on tape delay so that ABC could show the afternoon game in prime time.
It was still great, that Friday night. The country had been through some rough times with the Carter Administration. We were ripe for some nationalism and the coming of Ronald Reagan. It was the first time I ever heard the chant, U-S-A, U-S-A... Flags were being waved, people were crying and hugging each other. It was a scene to remember. The victory was named "The Greatest Sports Moment of the 20th Century" by Sports Illustrated. Al Michaels became a star and was named the "Sportscaster of the Year."
