RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This weekend at Catholic mass you will hear a portion of Isaiah's prophetic and instructional words that can be summed up "if you are with God, who cares what others do or think; love your neighbor."   Then will come a reading with the admonition by James to solidify your faith by acting ethically; as much in deed as in word.

In the gospel reading, Mark recounts a conversation between Jesus and his Apostles.  Jesus first asked them who they thought He was.  It seemed they were getting the idea.  Then He hit them with the idea that He needed to suffer greatly and die.  That didn't fit well with the idea that He was to be a king.  To top that off, He told them that if they were to follow him they would also have to be willing to suffer and die.  Yikes!

This conversation taught the Apostles just how much greater and more important the afterlife is compared to this life.  This is the lesson we must learn.  We humans are formed with an innate need and desire to preserve the life we have and please other people but we should be much more concerned with saving our life AFTER death and pleasing God.  If you believe in life after death, work to make it as best you can.

Have a great weekend.  I love you.
