RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

10/22/2021

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL

The UC Bearcats play football in Annapolis tomorrow at noon.  The Midshipmen had better batten down the hatches.  (That word batten is actually the name of the bar or piece of wood used to secure the hatches on a ship from the inside.)  Needless to say the Cats are highly favored and expected to score a lot of points.  But Navy plays a style of game different from most teams and that can be difficult to figure out - for a while.  I once was able to sit on the hillside in the end zone of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for a game on a bright Saturday afternoon - it was a delight.  Recent photos show that hillside may not be available any more.  May all participants be in good health at games end.

The Bengals play the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday at one.   This AFC North division game will be their sternest test of the year so far.  The Ravens are quarterbacked by Lamar Jackson - a freakish athlete who runs even better than he throws.  Baltimore is 5-1 with only an opening week overtime loss blotting their record.  Last week they demolished the LA Chargers who most consider a very good team.

Last weekend, of the fourteen NFL games, eight finished with 10 points or less between winner and loser.  Those close games are often decided by a field goal kicker.  The Ravens have the best; Justin Tucker.  I hope it doesn't come down to us hoping he misses at the buzzer.
